Apps are Free for a Reason
Limited Capacity seats available

Educators are challenged to identify mobile Apps that can be integrated into classroom instruction while expanding student knowledge, access and engagement. With the large number of Apps available, how do we determine which Apps are appropriate for student use? Who determines the “best” educational App lists? Where are the Apps reviewed and how can educators access those reviews? As we design digital-age learning experiences for students, educators must review and evaluate all tools, resources and materials used in the instructional realm. Evaluating mobile Apps prior to incorporating them into classroom instruction is critical to ensure the App is applicable to the subject area, appropriate for classroom use and content included in the App is acceptable for K-12 students.

This session will provide participants with the foundational elements needed for reviewing, evaluating, and selecting mobile Apps that are effective and appropriate for classroom integration. The evaluation process shared during this session has been proven effective for K-12 classrooms. Evidence of this success, rubrics used during the evaluation process, and samples of inappropriate Apps will be revealed during this session. Participants will leave the session with rubrics, resources, and evaluation processes that can be duplicated in their educational setting.

Designing and leading Technology Integration
Technology in education allows us to create broader communities from which we can all learn, share, and grow. This process requires a cultural shift in how schools integrate professional development, how teachers innovate in the classroom, and how students are motivated and challenged to learn. This session will share examples from my experience leading several large scale technology initiatives. Participants will leave with an understanding of how schools must plan and prepare a shift in thinking towards instructional design, in classroom practice and management, and in how we motivate and challenge our students each day--before bringing in technology.

Through the Eyes of a Digital Anthropologist: Exploring the culture of your learning community
Limited Capacity seats available

Journey with me through the digital jungle as we seek the way, the Tao, of learning! In working to improve the learning experience, many seek answers in the form of artifacts or arcane texts never knowing that what they seek lies within, within ourselves and within our learners. Yet, before we can tap into the passion of learners so that we might create participatory experiences, engage reluctant learners, reward hard chargers or recognize growth and ability over time regardless of age, experience, or discipline, we must first understand the learner’s culture. Learn to look with the eyes of a digital anthropologist, to see your learners for who they truly are. Together we will explore gamification, gamer psychology, motivation, passion and start to develop tools to discern how our own learners identify themselves so that we can better personalize the learning experience both in and out of the classroom.

Women in Technology - Panel Discussion
Limited Capacity seats available

In spite of prominent gains in the overall workforce, the presence of women in technology fields is not only low but seems to be shrinking! There is still a dearth of women in technology fields, with female Computer Science making up only 18% of students (down from 37% of students in the mid-1980’s). Fewer than 20% of tech jobs in high-profile companies (such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter) are staffed by women. Why is technology still a “boy’s club”? How are we, as educators, contributing to this problem and what can we do to improve? Join us for a frank discussion of women in technology fields. What hurdles do girls and women face at various stages? How can educators, administrators, and families help bring more women into this field and retain them?

Transform Teaching and Learning With An Authentic Audience
Limited Capacity seats available

Students are both motivated and engaged by genuine intellectual challenges and performances. This session will explore effective and meaningful uses of technology to empower students through digital platforms such as blogging, video, crowdfunding campaigns, podcasts and much more! When we give students the opportunity to publish their work online, they want it to be really good. However, when they simply turn it into the teacher, they usually just want it to be good enough. Providing an authentic audience gives the students a specific purpose and provides clarity about the goal. It also affords the incentive that the work they’re producing is not just for the teacher or a grade.

The result is harder work by the student with much greater focus on what they’re trying to accomplish. Participants will walk away with an appreciation of an authentic audience and be equipped with some practical ways to accomplish this in their classroom.

Don't Grade... Gamify!
Limited Capacity seats available

What exactly does S+ mean, anyway?
It’s time to bring our reporting methods in line with our updated practices by breaking away from traditional letter grades. Inspired by last year’s presentation, Multiplayer Classroom Designing Coursework As A Game, by Michael Matera, (@mmatera @edbeanbuzz, mrmatera.com) the resource team at Providence School in Jacksonville, FL championed a campaign to gamify the resource curricula. Being well aware that our current system of S+ to N was at best arbitrary, subjective, and reflective of conduct rather than competence, our resource team set out to gamify our K-5 classrooms in the areas of Art, PE, Music, Tech, Science, and Media. By creating a gaming culture including XP and achievement badges, we increased student interest, effort, and engagement while at the same time creating a system of feedback that tells a story far better than any letter grade could ever do. In this presentation we share where we are in our campaign, as well as our achievements and our challenges in hopes of inspiring educators to go from classrooms to kingdoms and from grades to gamification.

Explain Everything & the Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit
How do you capture and evaluate the process of learning? Design and media creation tools enable students to demonstrate their understanding in ways that static worksheets, paper and pencil activities, and even skill-based applications are not able to do. There are four simple media creation processes that are possible on any mobile device: making photos, taking screenshots, filming videos, and creating screencasts. These processes form the Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit (QFAT). While connecting research with practice, participants will become familiar with case studies and examples while engaging in hands-on activities that are intended to help make connections between student-created artifacts of understanding, visible thinking, and formative assessment for learning.

What Should Come First, Training or Professional Development?
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will explore why it's crucial for educators to recognize the difference between training, the HOW — a user manual on devices, software, apps or websites. And professional development, the WHY— focused on building the teacher’s capacity to shift away from traditional didactic teaching strategies to methods that fully engage students in the learning process. It concentrates on the importance of sound pedagogical practices and how to leverage technology to provide learning opportunities that don’t otherwise exist. Attendees will leave with an understanding that training without professional development could just lead to poor teaching being delivered faster and more efficiently. While training should certainly be part of the equation, it should take a back seat to professional development. When it comes to education technology, pedagogy should be the driver and technology the accelerator — otherwise, technology will simply end up being the brake.

Pitch Perfect: Design Thinking for a Personalized Learning
Limited Capacity seats available

Globally, educators strive to know what’s best for students, design the best learning environment, and continuously advocate for personalized professional growth. Participants will learn how to utilize “Pitch Perfect” design thinking to personalize learning for themselves, their students, and colleagues.

This two-hour think-tank workshop will move participants into an entrepreneurial mind-set and utilize moonshot thinking to explore endless possibilities. Those possibilities include building a business, pitching your ideas, and building a dynamic product to persuade the audience that your idea is worth the time or funding.

Gamestorming activities will be used to engage participants in a design challenge to develop innovative solutions to solve a problem and gain expertise for advocating for personalized learning with a start-up mindset!

Ideas to brainstorm from:
“How to create a pitch for educational resources!”
“How to pitch your case for an amazing “PL” for yourself or your team!”
“How to teach your students to “pitch”/advocate for their own learning!”

Execution:
1-Identify a challenge (Small groups will have choice in choosing a problem to solve)
2-Create an initiative that can be successfully scaled (Collaboration)
3. Design prototype solution or an online persuasive campaign (Video, GoFund Me campaign, presentation, etc.)
3-Pitch Perfect showcase (Present shark-tank style, but teacher friendly)
4. Feedback from experts (Wendy Wells, Hetlena Johnson, & special guest)

Take away: By utilizing design thinking for a “Pitch Perfect” classroom we can empower educators to personalized learning for themselves and for our students which will prepare them for future careers unknown.

Sketchnoting: Visually Taking Notes
Limited Capacity seats available

The term sketchnoting describes a style of visual note-taking recently gaining popularity among conference attendees. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be an artist to sketchnote and to take advantage of a different type of learning and making content connections beyond conference keynotes . Sketchnoting is helping make your thinking visible and shareable as you are reading a professional book, watching a movie clip, reading an educational blog post or article or listening to a lecture of conference keynote.

This workshop is for educators who want to hone their abilities to listen more intently, summarize and organize their notes in a visual way and learn how to do this with their students.

We will look at structures of a sketchnote, typography, connectors, containers and work on your own visual library.

Please come prepared to sketch by bringing a sketchbook or paper, a pencil or marker OR your favorite stylus and tablet with a sketchnoting app installed (ex. Paper by fiftythree, Flipink, Adobe Draw, etc.)

We’re Live! The Ins and Outs of Live Broadcasting
With a press of a button, you can be broadcasting live video to the world. Periscope, Meerkat, and Blab are three popular (and free) live streaming apps, and they are full of potential. Similar to Twitter, you choose who to follow, and you receive notifications when that person starts a broadcast. People who tune in live can type comments so that the broadcaster can interact with the audience.
Educators can jump in on broadcasts about topics like classroom management, setting up centers, or the latest apps. Teachers can step into other teachers’ classrooms and take a tour and ask questions. You might even catch live streams from conferences, workshops, and edcamps. Let’s compare the major live streaming apps, view clips from example broadcasts, discover who to follow, and brainstorm the best educational uses for live broadcasting.

New Math? Alphabet Soup? It may seem like it some days! The 4C’s (Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity, and Collaboration) were developed more than a decade ago via The Framework for 21st Century Skills. Most agree with the necessity of these learning and innovation skills to successfully survive in our increasingly complex environments. Activating them in the classroom is much more challenging. Using the 3D’s (Discover, Dabble and Distribute), participants will identify and construct examples of effective instructional strategies, combine them with engaging technology, and organically weave the 4C’s into everyday instructional practice.***Please note that this session has been assigned to the second floor with no elevator (climbing a flight of stairs is required).  If you would like to attend this session but need accessibility, please email across@sseds.org in advance and we will do our best to find an alternate arrangement.  Thank you!***

In this session we will highlight all the types of wearable tech being utilized for healthcare and the future innovations for life-changing discoveries that can benefit us all. (Apple’s ResearcKit)
Let’s get moving and explore different fitness stations to monitor our heart rate, record motion with step tracking, and identify how many calories are burned each time.

This session will share experiences with iPad integration in the classroom and focus around instructional design, rather than hardware and applications. We examine and explore instructional design with technology and develop conversations around how to plan lessons and units that shift learning from a passive, to an active experience. Participants will go through a prototyping session and design a lesson or unit that engages students brains actively during peak learning moments in the classroom. Additionally, participants will learn how to think spatially and design lessons that include every piece of the learning space. Ultimately, this process requires a cultural shift in how schools integrate professional development, how teachers innovate in the classroom, and how students are motivated and challenged to learn.

Cool Tools Are Fun, But Learning Should Come First
Limited Capacity seats available

Educators and technologists have been making the case for the transformative power of technology in teaching and learning for decades. However, despite the rhetoric and increasing efforts to integrate technology into the classroom, in many cases the results are insignificant and not yielding the return on education that districts are looking for. This is in part due to some teachers getting caught up in the latest edtech resources and failing to prioritize educational value above all else.

This session will explore the affordances of technology in teaching and learning as well as the importance of IT staff and educators being committed to understanding each other’s point of view. The mission of the school is more than simply running an email server or a data center. Although IT services are critical, the end goal is improving student outcomes. We owe it to our students to work toward this goal together and overcome the trap of putting the cart before the horse with education technology.

Integrating Design & Technology Into Conventional Curriculum
Limited Capacity seats available

We all want to make learning more memorable and connected. The best way to do this is through incorporating multiple subject areas with authentic projects. We’ll be talking about how we kicked it up a notch at our school by bringing together our school’s Design curriculum and our 6th grade students’ yearly Cardboard Car science project. Students used Design Thinking skills and TinkerCAD, a free web-based 3D design software, to plan and build models of their working full scale cardboard cars. In addition to touching on how other subject areas have been integrated in our school, we will facilitate a discussion amongst those in attendance about what amazing things you’ve done (or want to do) yourselves. Come join in the conversation!

Moving the Unmovable Teacher
Limited Capacity seats available

Every school has it’s hardened unmovable teacher who are comfortable just doing what they’ve always done. In this presentation, Richard will offer advice on how he provided his teachers with practical steps that made such clear and obvious sense, even to the most cynical, that these more reluctant colleagues were quick to make shifts towards 21st century teaching practices they had been negative towards beforehand. This is packed with great advice for school leaders on how to offer incentives to make change in teaching practice without increasing workload.
