It is no surprise that learning and fun are highly compatible. Even Einstein recognized that “play is the greatest form of research.” When learning is genuinely joyful it results in a phenomenon I affectionately refer to as ‘mental merriment’—those cognitive moments of pure wonderment and awe. Yet, even with the rise of inquiry-based learning, PBL, and the use of technology, classrooms tend to be profoundly un-playful places. If you’d like to cultivate an atmosphere where students think beyond boundaries and create with endless possibility then join me as we build catapults to play live Angry Birds, fold record breaking paper airplanes, generate pet tornadoes, and get lost beneath giant clouds of dry ice all with the intent of cultivating mental merriment. You’ll even experience how your leaf blower can become a powerful tool to demonstrate Bernoulli’s principal and the scientific method.
